Matthew Hopkins was an incline witchfinder who was responsible for the ruthless persecution of dozens of alleged witches during the witchcraft hallucination that swept parts of England below the prudes. Born in c.1621 Hopkins was a son of a parson and raised in Essex, which had a long tradition persecuting witches. Hopkins fail law and had a miscellanea of occupational groups before he turn over water upon the idea of establishing his career as a witchfinder in the Essex parish of Manningtree and Mistley some 1644.
