IS MOTIVATION LEARNED ?


According to Weiten (1989), Motives are the needs, losss, interests and desires that propel us in certain directions. (p.348). Motivation, therefore is behavior that is goal oriented. thither are several theories as to what motivates us to behave the elbow room we do. Weiner (1985) believed that most motivatingal psychologists saw behaviour as under the puzzle out of the joyousness-pain principle (p.275). That is, we all seek to maximise our pleasure and minimise our painful experiences and therefore behave accordingly. Theories on motivation include; Instinctive, Drive, Incentive, Cognitive, Attribution and social learning theories. Motivation is depict as learned, innate or mixture of both.

Instinctive theories began in the 19th century and argued that motivation comes from innate biological program (Weiten 1989) and defines instincts as patterns n behaviour that are unlearned, uniform in expression and universal in a species (p. 349).

Weiner (1985) defines instincts as potentialities for follow up and are considered unlearned wants or urges which are built into the complex body part of the organism (p.28). Freud (cited in Bindra & Stewart 1973), also adopted the instinctive theory.



He saw instincts as a form of energy that exerts influence on the mind, which then leads to behaviour. According to Weiner (1985), Freud also believed that, although the goals of instinct are constant, the means obtaining them and expression in this, chiffonier vary. For example, aggressive instincts can be satisfied through war, self-destructive acts or anti-social behaviour. (p.29)

Weiten (1989) believed that instinct theories did not explain the flexibility that exists in human beings behaviour. He pointed out that maternal instincts could not explain why some mothers love their new-borns & others do not. This indicates some behaviours can be learned.
