According to Weiten (1989), Motives are the needs, losss, interests and desires that propel us in certain directions. (p.348). Motivation, therefore is behavior that is goal oriented. thither are several theories as to what motivates us to behave the elbow room we do. Instinctive theories began in the 19th century and argued that motivation comes from innate biological program (Weiten 1989) and defines instincts as patterns n behaviour that are unlearned, uniform in expression and universal in a species (p. 349).

Weiner (1985) defines instincts as potentialities for follow up and are considered unlearned wants or urges which are built into the complex body part of the organism (p.28). Freud (cited in Bindra & Stewart 1973), also adopted the instinctive theory.
