Bastard Out of Carolina

Ogorek says that it is an "exceptional first novel," and comments that "this stunning, fluid, sad, and undaunted story would be outstanding even if it were the author's tenth [novel]" (Ogorek 1334). pause comments that it is:

An extraordinary portrait of coming of age, full of the complexities of mother-child relations, growing bemusement with one's body, sexual awakening, self-doubt, and all this in the context of southern poverty, which as well makes this a remarkable example of regional writing (Wear 1).

The unknown reviewer in Publishers Weekly calls Bastard Out of Carolina a "first novel spiced with pungent characters ranging from the slatternly to the grotesque" (88), and George Garrett is quoted in the New York Times Book Review as formulation Allison's "technical skill in both large things and inside information . . . is simply stunning, about as close to flawless as any reader could ask for" (32).

Despite the overwhelming raves, however, at least one reviewer, Jeff Korelitz, cannot quite approbation the novel unconditionally:

Allison has a superb ear for the specific dialogue of her characters, and os is a spunky and memorable heroine, but the book seems more than often to meander than to move, lending its conclusion an air of inconclusiveness. Allison, copiously gifted, will certainly go on to write recrudesce novels, and Bastard out of Car

Nonetheless, Kenan does praise Allison's portrayal of her central character, Bone Boatwright:

"Bastard Out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison." New York Times Book Review 98 (1993): 32.
