Ethernet was created at Xerox PARC throughout 1973 and 1974. ALOHAnet had inspired Robert Metcalfes studies and his PhD dissertation. The base was first documented by Metcalfe on May 22, 1973. A patent application was filed in 1975 that listed Metcalf, David Boggs, Butler Lampson and Chuck Thacker as Ethernets creators. Metcalf and Boggs published a seminal paper in 1976, after the system had been deployed.
Metcalfe left Xerox in June 1979 to form 3Com. He convinced DEC, Intel, and Xerox to work together to promote Ethernet as a standard. This standard was named DIX after DEC/Intel/Xerox. The DIX standard undertake 10 Mb/s Ethernet with 48-bit destination and source addresses and a 16-bit global ether-type field. Ethernet originally competed with two for the most part patented systems, the Token Ring and Token Bus. The first Ethernet 3C100 transceiver was shipped by 3Com in March 1981. 3Com became a major company and began sell adapters for PDP-11s and VAXes as well as multibus-based Intel and Sun Microsystem computers.
