The poetry “To An Athlete Dying Young,” is a poem base on glory. It is centered on the theme of glory and portrays a infantile athlete dying young. Within this poem in that respect seems to be three main characters. There is the starting time (the athlete), the narrator, and the town who are witnessing this wide accomplishment. This poem suggests the idea of death to the reader. It makes one think about what happens to those who die young and what the true heart and soul of life is. Is it okay for one to die so young after they accomplish and complete something great? Does one lack to leave this world with a big name, and be remembered for the great things which they accomplished? Or should we want to live on and filter out to accomplish more greatness before our time comes?
This poem is broken into seven stanzas which each consent their own sizeableness and relevancy to the poem as a whole. Most of the lines in each stanza are in iambic tetrameter meaning they have four feet followed by an un accent syllable followed by a stressed syllable. For example, in line one, we see the words: time won town race. There are four figures of speech which are found in this poem, alliteration, oxymoron, personification, and synecdoche.
